What is acid reflux?
Acid reflux occurs when stomach acid travels back into your oesophagus. This can cause a burning sensation in your chest or throat, known as heartburn. Contrary to popular belief, it is not caused by excess stomach acid, although there is uncertainty around the specific reason why it occurs.
Sometimes, various lifestyle factors or foods might cause or worsen symptoms of acid reflux, including a diet that is high in fat, anxiety or smoking.
If acid reflux persists, it may be a sign of an underlying medical condition like gastroesophageal reflux disease (GORD) and you should consult your doctor.
