The big questions

What is acid reflux?

Acid reflux occurs when stomach acid travels back into your oesophagus. This can cause a burning sensation in your chest or throat, known as heartburn. Contrary to popular belief, it is not caused by excess stomach acid, although there is uncertainty around the specific reason why it occurs.

Sometimes, various lifestyle factors or foods might cause or worsen symptoms of acid reflux, including a diet that is high in fat, anxiety or smoking.

If acid reflux persists, it may be a sign of an underlying medical condition like gastroesophageal reflux disease (GORD) and you should consult your doctor.

How can I treat acid reflux?

Acid reflux is very treatable. The most effective route is usually medication, but some people also benefit from natural remedies for acid reflux. Avoiding certain foods and following an acid reflux diet plan can help reduce symptoms such as heartburn.

Acid reflux medicines include antacids and proton pump inhibitors (PPIs). These medicines work to neutralise or slow the acid production in your stomach. Antacids are good at providing rapid, short-term relief for heartburn. PPIs are more effective if acid reflux is persistent as they reduce the amount of acid that the stomach is producing.

Acid reflux treatment: the science

Acid reflux occurs when acid travels up from your stomach towards your throat. Symptoms of acid reflux include heartburn (a burning sensation in your chest) and an unpleasant taste in your mouth.

Medicines called antacids can provide short-term relief, particularly after meals. They neutralise stomach acid and form a protective barrier on the top of the contents of the stomach to prevent acid from travelling up to the oesophagus.

Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) are another acid reflux medication. They work by reducing the amount of acid produced in the stomach, providing long-term relief from acid reflux.
