The big questions
What is asthma?
Asthma is an inflammatory condition of the lungs that can make it difficult to breathe. Symptoms include coughing, wheezing, or a tight chest. The cause of asthma is not always known, but it can be made worse by changes in the weather, allergies, or infections.
How can I treat asthma?
Asthma is treated by using inhalers which deliver medication to the lungs to help relieve breathlessness and prevent symptoms. It’s important to also monitor your asthma using a device called a Peak Flow Meter that checks if your airways are restricted.
How asthma treatments work
- Inhalers are used for the treatment of asthma. These devices help to deliver medication to different parts of your lungs, and you may be prescribed more than one.
- Reliever inhalers work to open the airways when you are short of breath and are used as needed.
- Preventer inhalers are taken daily to reduce inflammation and prevent symptoms from arising in the first place.
