Menopause test kits, especially those that measure FSH (follicle-stimulating hormone), can give you helpful insights, but they’re not a definitive diagnosis on their own.
That’s because hormone levels naturally fluctuate during the perimenopausal years, and can be affected by things like age, contraception, or hormone therapy. For women over 45, guidelines recommend diagnosing menopause based mainly on symptoms and menstrual changes, rather than hormone tests alone.
However, a menopause blood test may still be useful if:
You’re between 40–45 and experiencing symptoms
You’re under 40, and early menopause or premature ovarian insufficiency is suspected
You’re using certain types of contraception (like the progestogen-only pill), and want help understanding where you are in your journey
