FAQS

Your questions answered

Female hormones play a key role in regulating and managing your reproductive health. The key ones are Oestradiol, Follicle-Stimulating Hormone (FSH), luteinising hormone (LH), and progesterone. Testosterone is also an important female hormone - it’s often tested if PCOS or other hormonal conditions are suspected. These hormones fluctuate naturally throughout your monthly menstrual cycle and change with age.

A female hormone test is a blood test used to check levels of essential female hormones that can affect anything from your mood to your weight.

A Female Hormone Blood Test checks for key hormones that affect your menstrual cycle, fertility, mood, energy levels, and overall wellbeing. These typically include:

Oestrogen: to assess ovary function and hormonal balance

FSH and LH: to understand your cycle stage or signs of menopause

Progesterone: to confirm if ovulation has occurred

Testosterone and FAI: to check for high androgen levels, which can affect skin, hair, and menstrual regularity

SHBG: to see how much hormone is freely available in your body

Prolactin: to identify issues that might affect your periods or fertility

This test isn’t a fertility test, but it can be a helpful first step to gaining clarity on your hormone levels. Hormones in this test like oestrogen, progesterone, FSH and LH play a key role in ovulation and cycle regularity.

No, this blood test cannot diagnose conditions, but it is designed to help you understand whether your symptoms could be linked to hormonal imbalance.

For the most accurate results, take the test on Day 2 to Day 5 of your menstrual cycle, ideally on Day 3. Day 1 is the first day of bleeding.

If you have irregular periods, we recommend that you wait until your next cycle to test as close to Day 3 as possible.

If you have no periods, you can take this test on any day, but it might be harder for our doctors to interpret your results. If you haven't had a period in over 12 months, check out our Menopause Blood Test.

No, fasting is not required for this blood test.

With the finger prick test, you may feel a small prick and the area may be a bit tender afterwards. With the Tasso+ device, you can easily collect blood without pricking your finger. Attach the device to your upper arm and press—it's as simple as that.

Yes, one of our doctors will review your sample and provide a clear breakdown of what your results mean, plus personalised advice and next steps if any treatment or follow-up is needed.

Some biomarkers such as AMH and thyroid hormones can be tested while on hormonal treatment, but results for biomarkers such as FSH, LH, or oestradiol - which are included in this test - will not show your natural cycle due to hormonal therapy such as contraception and this test is not suitable if you are taking hormonal contraception. We recommend that you discuss with your healthcare provider to determine if this test is right for you if you are taking hormonal therapy, and if you’re stopping the hormonal contraceptive pill, we advise that you wait until your periods return to normal before testing. We recommend using alternative contraception if you’re not planning to become pregnant.

Yes, you can book one of our one-off doctor consultations to speak with a UK-based doctor via telephone for 20 minutes about the results of a Numan blood test, or any of the conditions we treat at Numan.
