5 ways good sleep improves your health

By Joe Young | Medically reviewed by Dr Leah Gorodi

Waking up in a daze and hitting the snooze button. Hitting it again. And again. We’ve all been there. A minor inconvenience? Or could it be a bigger issue?

Sleeping is not a luxury. It’s a necessity that’s fundamental to your health. So rest easy. Join the dream team.

1. Help your heart

Sleep is the anchor to your body’s health. Without it, you are lost in a sea of health problems. It’s essential for cardiovascular health. Without good rest, your body is at increased risk of coronary artery disease or a stroke.

Consistent bad sleep can spiral you out of control. Poor sleep causes bad habits. It’s associated with heightened stress levels, less exercise, and unhealthy food choices - all causes of serious heart issues. Better sleep. Better decisions.

2. Enhance weight loss

After a night of bad sleep, it’s tempting to reach for a high-calorie solution. A full English breakfast, an entire bar of chocolate, or a sports drink are suddenly all the more appealing. Who wants an apple in such desperate times? Not getting enough sleep is associated with increased snacking.

On top of this, research has shown that getting less than 6 hours of sleep a night is enough to interfere with insulin sensitivity, harming your body’s ability to break down carbohydrates.

Studies have even shown that just one night of bad sleep is enough to harm insulin production in healthy people. One restless night could equal increased fat storage.  If you struggle to lose weight, going to bed earlier is the answer.

3. Have better sex

Sex and sleep are intertwined. If you sleep well, you’ll have better sex. If you have sex, you will sleep deeper.

After an orgasm, the body releases hormones, oxytocin and prolactin. It also reduces levels of cortisol which is released when you’re stressed. This also occurs with masturbation - good news for single people.

On the other hand, sleep disorders like sleep apnea have been associated with a higher risk of erectile dysfunction. Poor sleep can lead to emotional and relationship problems. Conflict with a partner is more likely. Stress is heightened. All factors leading to a bad night in bed.

4. Focus on your fitness

You can’t have one without the other. Fitness and sleep have an important relationship. After a good night’s sleep, you’ll be more inclined to step, spin, or rep in the gym. Sleep better. Don’t undermine your body. Without it, your body can’t recover. After an intense workout, sleep helps your body conserve energy, repair, and build muscles. Sleep also releases growth hormones, with poor-quality sleep reducing the amount your body produces.

5. Stress less

Lack of sleep has consequences. Mood. Interests. Motivation. Energy. Patience. All can be affected by a bad night of rest. Don’t get caught in a cycle of stress and anxiety due to poor sleep. Adults who sleep fewer than eight hours a night are more likely to have a stressful day.

Little challenges like getting stuck in traffic, arguments with family, or even what TV show to watch next can cause serious frustration when you’re tired. Improve your day-to-day life. Go to bed.

The numan take

No sleep is a mind killer. But it’s also a body killer. It’s integral to your health. Take control and reap the rewards of deep sleep. Motivation, mood, sex, and stress. Everything improves after a night of proper rest.
