Is paroxetine effective for premature ejaculation?

By Luke Chapman | Medically reviewed by Dr Luke Pratsides

Frustration. Loneliness. Hopelessness. Experiencing premature ejaculation (PE) can cause many unpleasant feelings, but there’s good news – you’re not alone. It’s the most common ejaculation problem faced by men and can affect men of any age. Whatever your age and however long you’ve experienced the issue, there are ways to combat premature ejaculation. The latest treatment? Paroxetine. And, as you’re probably wondering…

What is paroxetine?

Paroxetine is an antidepressant. It belongs to a group known as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, which means it increases the amount of serotonin in the brain. It’s typically used to treat depression, OCD, panic attacks, PTSD, and anxiety. Since experts have noted that the drug delays ejaculation, it’s often prescribed as off-label for the treatment of premature ejaculation

The difference in treatments belongs in the frequency. When taking paroxetine for premature ejaculation, you should take a single dose a few hours before having sex. For mental health issues, the treatment is daily.

How does paroxetine combat premature ejaculation?

Serotonin is a critical component of ejaculatory response. Typically, high amounts of serotonin delay the time taken to trigger ejaculation. So, when paroxetine activates an increased amount of serotonin, you should experience longer times before ejaculation. But does it actually work?

In a study on the use of paroxetine for the treatment of premature ejaculation, over two-thirds of men experienced delayed ejaculation - a vast improvement for many. Only around 8% experienced paroxetine side effects – such as inhibited orgasm and reduced libido- whilst the majority experienced no side effects.

How does paroxetine compare to other Numan products?

There are various methods to combat premature ejaculation. Our Delay Spray and Delay Wipes are simple, quick and effective ways to improve your chances of prolonging the time before ejaculation. They slightly reduce the sensitivity of your penis, allowing you to last longer. The best part? They’re effective almost immediately, so you can enjoy longer sex without awkwardly waiting beforehand. No messing around.

You can also opt for Viagra Connect – or the cheaper alternatives, Tadalafil and Sildenafil – which help you to achieve an erection for longer. This doesn’t directly combat premature ejaculation, but it does help you have sex again after ejaculation as PE and ED often occur together. The causes of premature ejaculation are mainly psychological, so taking an ED product usually relieves the pressure of experiencing PE. It’s the perfect back-up option.

Priligy is another option, which is a pill that can be taken 1-2 hours before sex. It lasts up to six hours and is clinically proven to help men last up to three times longer. However, it’s not available for everyone.

It can only be obtained via a prescription from a doctor and isn’t suitable for men living with heart disease, experiencing issues with blood clotting or who are on certain medications. You also must have experienced PE for at least six months to be accepted.

Paroxetine works similarly to Priligy, yet it can be obtained off-label. It’s much more accessible – we’ll ask a few questions about your health and history with premature ejaculation to assess if it’s the right treatment. It’s a fuss-free option.

How long does paroxetine take to work?

It takes 3-4 hours to take effect. Make sure to take it in the required amount of time before having sex to enjoy a prolonged time before ejaculation. Obviously this requires some foreplanning, though it’s still beneficial if you take it without having sex – it can improve your mood and energy levels.

Can you take paroxetine with ED products?

Yes. Unlike Priligy – which can’t be taken with ED products – paroxetine can be combined with sildenafil and tadalafil. So double up if you’re experiencing both problems. It covers all areas and allows you to actually enjoy sex without the panic of PE or ED setting in. Imagine the new levels of confidence.

If you’re doubtful, a combination of paroxetine and sildenafil can achieve better results than paroxetine alone. If you’d feel more confident going with both, go for it. However, it’s worth noting that taking both can increase the chances of side effects. Like many treatments, a clinician can help you discover the right approach.

How long does paroxetine stay in your system?

Paroxetine has a half-life of around 21-24 hours. That means it can stay in your system for up to five days. We recommend keeping your dosage to a maximum of once per day, even if you’re having sex multiple times per day.

The numan take

Regain control over ejaculation. Paroxetine can be prescribed off-label for the treatment of premature ejaculation. Many appreciate the subtlety of taking a pill and experiencing the benefits hours later – you can relax as it gets to work. It’s also a key boost in the psychological battle with premature ejaculation. It alleviates the stress of experiencing PE and allows you to focus on the fun part. It’s a no-brainer.
