How it works

  • Viagra Connect works by helping to relax and open up the blood vessels in your penis, allowing for increased blood flow.
  • This means that when you are sexually aroused, you can achieve a harder and longer-lasting erection.

Viagra Connect: The facts you need to know

  • What can I expect to happen when I take Viagra Connect?

Taking Viagra Connect doesn’t result in an instantaneous erection - a little bit of planning is required. Sildenafil (the active ingredient in Viagra Connect) starts working an hour after you take it, and the effects last for four to five hours. This means that there’s a window of about three hours when you can plan to have sex - and you’ll need to be sexually aroused for sildenafil to take effect. Your resultant erection should feel harder and last longer than before. Eating a large meal at the same time as taking sildenafil can delay the effects by about an hour.

It’s worth noting that sildenafil doesn’t alter libido or sexual desire. It also doesn’t have an effect on your testosterone levels.

  • Can I take a dose of Viagra Connect more than once per day?

No. The recommended starting dose for Viagra Connect is 50mg taken once per day, as required.

If taking Viagra Connect is proving difficult to coordinate with sexual activity or if spontaneity is important to you, tadalafil may be a better alternative. Tadalafil works similarly to Viagra Connect, but it starts working within 30 minutes and effects last up to 36 hours.

  • Why is Viagra Connect more expensive than sildenafil?

Viagra connect is the over-the-counter version of Viagra, which is a brand name used by the pharmaceutical company (Pfizer) that manufactures it. Both contain the same active ingredient, sildenafil. Pfizer was the original company to synthesise and test the drug, a process which costs a considerable amount of money. After a certain period of time, the formula for the medicine is disclosed to generic manufacturers who can make it at a lower cost because they do not face the same overhead costs.

  • Is Viagra Connect safe long term?

Results of a study looking at men using sildenafil (the active ingredient in Viagra Connect) as needed over the course of four years suggest that that it is safe and effective over a prolonged period of time.

In general, if you’re finding you need to take sildenafil for ED over a long period of time, it’s worth trying to investigate and treat the underlying causes with the help of your doctor. There’s plenty of information about the possible underlying causes of ED in Numan’s Book of Erections.

  • What are the common side effects of Viagra Connect?

Some of the most commonly reported side-effects of Viagra Connect are:

    • - headache
    • - dizziness, feeling faint
    • - nasal congestion/stuffiness
    • - feeling hot or flushed, including facial flushing
    • - nausea
    • - indigestion
    • - visual changes (including colour changes, sensitivity to light and blurred vision)
There are a number of other side effects which may be experienced when taking Viagra Connect - a complete list is available in the Patient Information Leaflet (PIL) enclosed in your medication which you should always read prior to taking it for the first time.

  • Does drinking alcohol make Viagra Connect less effective?

Drinking alcohol causes a drop in blood pressure which, when erectile dysfunction is already present, can make it even more difficult to get an erection. In combination with Viagra Connect, it can worsen side effects such as headache, dizziness and feeling faint.
