How to use Wegovy: A step-by-step guide

Using Wegovy can be simple and straightforward with the correct guidance. While it's essential to follow the detailed instructions provided in the leaflet inside your medication box, here’s a step-by-step guide to make the process easier to follow.

Step 1: Prepare your dose with the pre-filled pen

1. Select the pen that is labelled with your prescribed weekly dosage.

2. Check the pen to make sure it isn’t damaged, the expiration date hasn’t passed, and that the medicine is clear and colourless in the window within the pen.

3. Pull off the pen cap. The needle is hidden within the pen.

4. Always use a new needle for each injection. Take a needle when you are ready to take your injection. Check the paper tab and the outer needle cap for damages. Tear off the paper tab. 

   1. If you see any damage, this could affect sterility. Dispose of it and use a new needle.

5. Push the needle straight onto the pen. Turn until it’s on tight.

6. Remove both caps from the needle.

7. Check the flow by letting a tine bit out with each new pen (you only need to do this once).

Step 2: Choose your injection site

1. Decide where on your body you’ll inject the medicine. 

   1. You can either inject it into your stomach (at least 2 inches from your belly button) or in your upper legs on the front of your thighs. 

   2. If someone else is helping you, they can inject it into your upper arm.

2. You can inject the pen into the same body part each week, but make sure it isn’t in the exact same spot.

3. Expose the area of skin you’ll be injecting into and ensure there is no visible break or damage to the skin. 

Step 3: Inject your dose

1. Position the pen at the injection site, ensuring you can see the pen window.

2. Push the pen firmly against the skin and apply continuous pressure. You should hear a click to tell you that the injection has started.

3. Press and hold down the dose button until the dose counter shows -0-. Keep pressing the dose button with the needle in your skin and slowly count to 6.

4. The -0- must line up with the dose pointer. You may hear or feel a click when the dose counter returns to 0.

5. Remove the needle from your skin. If blood appears at the injection site, press on it lightly with a clean tissue, but do not rub the area.

Step 4: After the injection

1. Without touching the needle tip or the outer needle cap, guide the used needle into the outer cap on a flat surface. Once the needle is covered, carefully push the outer needle cap completely on.  

2. Unscrew the needle and dispose of it carefully as instructed by your doctor, nurse, pharmacist, or local authorities. 

3. Never try to put the inner needle cap back on the needle. You may prick yourself with the needle. 

4. Always dispose of the needle immediately after each injection to prevent blocked needles, contamination, infection and inaccurate dosing. Never store your pen with the needle attached. 

5. Put the pen cap on your pen after each use to protect Wegovy from light.
