For a long time, if you wanted effective GLP-1 weight loss treatment in the UK, you needed to be comfortable with a weekly injection. For plenty of people, that was fine. For plenty of others, it was the thing that stopped them from starting, or even asking.

That's changed. The MHRA approved the Wegovy Pill in June 2026, making it the first oral GLP-1 medication approved for weight management in the UK. If the needle was what was putting you off, it no longer has to be.

Who is it actually for?

People who don't get on with needles

This is more common than people tend to admit. Our research found that 19% of people interested in weight loss medication say needle aversion is the main reason they haven't started.1 And among people living with obesity who report needle aversion, 58% have put off or avoided a medical appointment because of it.1

That's a lot of people who wanted help but couldn't get past the need to inject. The Wegovy pill changes that. Same medication, no needle.

People whose lives don't suit a weekly injection

Injectable medications need to be kept in the fridge. They need a consistent routine. If you travel a lot, work shifts, or just have a life that doesn't fit neatly around a weekly injection schedule, that adds friction, and friction is often what stands between starting treatment and not.

A tablet is simpler. It goes in your bag, it doesn't need refrigerating, and it doesn't require you to plan your week around it.

Does it work?

Yes, and the evidence behind GLP-1 medications broadly is some of the strongest in weight management. The SELECT trial followed over 17,000 people on injectable semaglutide and found not just meaningful weight loss, but significant reductions in serious heart events too.2 The Wegovy Pill uses the same active ingredient as the injectable version.

Clinical trials for the pill showed an average weight loss of 16.6% over 64 weeks.3 That's a clinically meaningful result, and it comes in a format that works for people who previously felt like this kind of treatment wasn't for them.

How to access the pill

The Wegovy Pill is available through Numan from July 2026. Like all GLP-1 medications, it's prescription-only, meaning you'll need a clinical assessment to make sure it's right for you. But if you meet the criteria, you can get started without a needle.

It's worth knowing that oral semaglutide does come with a specific morning routine: empty stomach, a small glass of water, and a 30-minute wait before eating. It sounds more complicated than it is, and most people get used to it quickly. We've got a full guide to it here if you want to know more.

There's also a second oral GLP-1 medication - orforglipron (Foundayo) - expected to be available in the UK later in 2026.4

The numan take

If you've been thinking about GLP-1 treatment but the needle was putting you off, then this may be the update you've been waiting for. Effective, clinician-reviewed weight loss treatment is now available in tablet form in the UK, and you can access it through Numan right now. The medication hasn't changed. The barrier has.
