What is Mounjaro?
Mounjaro (tirzepatide) is a new medication licensed for weight loss in certain groups of people. The active ingredient (tirzepatide) was originally designed for use in the treatment of type 2 diabetes,¹ used to help manage blood sugar levels more effectively, but due to positive impact on peoples weight being seen it was approved for use in the treatment of obesity in 2023.
Taken once a week through a simple injection, Mounjaro is now licensed for use as a weight loss medication.¹
How effective is Mounjaro?
Mounjaro has shown great results for weight loss. Clinical studies have shown that people using Mounjaro lose more weight compared to those on other weight loss medications.
Patients lost an average of 9.81 kg (about 21.6 lbs) compared to placebo, with even higher reductions at higher doses.²
Weight loss increased with higher doses (5 mg, 10 mg, and 15 mg) demonstrating a clear dose-response relationship.²
More participants achieved at least 5%, 10%, and 15% body weight reductions compared to those on placebo or other diabetes medications.²

Mounjaro treatment dosages
When starting Mounjaro, the dosage is gradually increased through a process called dose titration. This step-by-step approach allows your body to adjust to the medication smoothly and helps to minimise any potential side effects.²
It’s worth noting that not everyone will need the highest dose to see effective results. Your maintenance dose will depend on how your body responds throughout the treatment.²

10mg and 15mg are the higher maintenance doses, achieved by titrating up by 2.5mg every 4 weeks.
Who is eligible for Mounjaro?
Mounjaro is recommended for managing obesity as part of a comprehensive plan that includes a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity. To be eligible for Mounjaro, you must meet the following criteria:3
An initial BMI of at least 30 kg/m².
Or a BMI of 27 kg/m2 to <30 kg/m2 (overweight) in the presence of at least one weight-related comorbid condition.
Mounjaro is designed to support significant weight loss alongside lifestyle changes, helping to improve health outcomes for those at higher risk due to obesity. If you fit these criteria, then you may be eligible for treatment.
Who should not take Mounjaro?
You shouldn't take Mounjaro if you:
Are pregnant or breastfeeding
Have a history of medullary thyroid cancer or MEN2 syndrome
Have severe gastrointestinal disease or pancreatitis
Are allergic to tirzepatide or any pen components

How to use Mounjaro
Taking Mounjaro is simple and straightforward. It comes in a pre-filled injection pen that you take once a week. You can inject Mounjaro in the following areas:
Stomach: At least 2 inches away from your belly button.
Thighs: Either thigh is suitable, just avoid the inner thigh.
Upper arm: The back of the upper arm if someone else is administering the injection.
Make sure to rotate the injection site each week to prevent irritation. Avoid areas that are bruised, red, or sore. After use, simply dispose of the pen safely in a yellow sharps bin and you’re good to go.
Step 1: Prepare your pen
• Select the correct Mounjaro KwikPen with your prescribed weekly dose.
• Check the pen: make sure the medication is clear and colourless/slightly yellow, and that the pen is undamaged and within its expiry date.
• Pull off the pen cap.
• Wipe the red inner seal with an alcohol wipe.
• Always use a new needle. Inspect the needle packaging and cap for damage. If damaged, dispose and use a new one.
• Remove the paper tab from the needle. Push it straight onto the pen and twist until secure.
• Remove both the outer and inner caps from the needle.
• Prime the pen: turn the dose knob slowly until you hear two clicks and the extended line appears in the dose window (this is the prime position).
• Hold the pen with the needle pointing up. Gently tap the cartridge holder to move air bubbles to the top.
• Push in the dose knob fully and count to 5. ‘0’ should appear in the dose window and a drop of medicine should come out.
• If no medicine appears, repeat up to 2 more times. If still no drop, change the needle and try again.
Step 2: Choose your injection site
• You can inject into your stomach (at least 2 inches away from your belly button) or the front of your thighs.
• If someone else is helping, they can inject into your upper arm.
• Rotate injection sites each week to avoid irritation, even if using the same general area.
• Make sure the skin is clean and undamaged. Clean with an alcohol wipe and allow to dry.
Step 3: Inject the dose
• Turn the dose knob until it stops and the ‘1’ is shown in the dose window.
• Position the pen firmly against your skin where you plan to inject.
• Push the pen down with steady pressure, then press and hold the dose knob until it stops.
• Count to 5 slowly while holding the knob.
• Ensure the ‘0’ appears in the dose window before removing the needle from your skin.
• If you notice any blood, press gently with a tissue—do not rub the area.
Step 4: Dispose and store safely
• Without touching the needle, guide it into the outer needle cap placed on a flat surface.
• Once the needle is covered, push the outer cap on fully.
• Unscrew the needle and dispose of it in a sharps bin.
• Never recap the inner needle—this can lead to accidental injury.
• Always remove the needle after each injection to prevent blockages, infection, and incorrect dosing.
• Replace the pen cap and store the pen properly, away from light.

If you miss a dose of Mounjaro, you should take it within 4 days. If more than 4 days have passed you should skip the dose and take your next one on your usual day.
There isn't a one-sized-fits-all timeframe for how long an individual needs to use Mounjaro. For some people, a shorter treatment duration may suffice. For others, they may find the benefits are needed lifelong.

Keep your Mounjaro KwikPen in the refrigerator at 2°C to 8°C. Do not freeze it. If needed, Mounjaro can be stored unrefrigerated for up to 30 days, as long as the temperature stays below 30°C. After 30 days out of the fridge, the pen must be discarded, even if it hasn’t been used. Always check the expiry date before use. The shelf life of a refrigerated, unopened pen is 24 months, and the expiry date of your pen will be printed on the box.
While Mounjaro is generally well-tolerated, some people may experience side effects, primarily gastrointestinal, such as nausea, diarrhoea, and vomiting (may affect up to 1 in 10 people), especially during the initial phase of treatment. These side effects are usually mild to moderate and tend to decrease over time. It's important to read the Patient Information Leaflet provided with your package and consult your healthcare provider for a comprehensive list of side effects and advice on managing them.

A clinician will carry out an assessment and determine whether it’s a safe and effective treatment for you. Each Mounjaro KwikPen contains 3 ml of liquid. It's designed to deliver 0.6 ml per dose, providing a total of 4 doses per pen. The pen holds more than 2.4 ml of usable liquid to ensure there is enough for priming before each dose.
After you’ve used all 4 doses, it’s normal to see some liquid left in the pen. This leftover medicine means the pen worked correctly. You won’t be able to dial another full dose, so it’s time to throw the pen away, even if there’s some liquid still inside.

To get all four doses from your Mounjaro KwikPen, follow the priming and dosing instructions in the leaflet inside your medication box or the Patient Information Leaflet. Priming helps get rid of any air in the pen and makes sure it's working correctly. After each dose, you can check the plunger position to confirm the dose was delivered properly.

If the dose knob on your KwikPen is hard to push, try these steps:
Prime the pen before each injection to remove any air. Never apply pressure to the dose knob without a pen needle attached as there’s no path for the medication to go.
Push the dose knob down more slowly; this can make it easier to inject.
Make sure you’re using a new, properly attached pen needle each time. If the new needle is faulty or blocked, put on another new needle and prime the pen.
Store the pen in a clean, dry place to prevent any dirt or damage.
