THE SCIENCE

How do premature ejaculation treatments work?

How we make it possible for you to have longer-lasting sex.

The treatments

Innovative methods of delaying ejaculation enable longer-lasting sex without compromising on pleasure.

The mechanism

Some treatments delay premature ejaculation by boosting serotonin levels in the body, and others work by gently reducing sensitivity in the penis.

The timing

Treatments for premature ejaculation can take as little as 10 seconds to start working, and usually last long enough for satisfying sex.

What is premature ejaculation?

Premature ejaculation is a common sexual dysfunction where an individual ejaculates earlier than they’d like during sexual activity. It can cause distress and frustration and can occur for a variety of reasons. Psychological contributors may include anxiety, stress, or relationship issues, while physical factors can range from hormonal imbalances to certain neurological conditions.

There are simple ways to treat premature ejaculation and medical intervention can provide individuals with tailored strategies that help solve the issue.

How can premature ejaculation be treated?

Treatment for premature ejaculation often involves a combination of techniques. Behavioural strategies like the stop-start or squeeze techniques can be helpful.

Medications such as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) or topical anaesthetics may be prescribed. Counselling or therapy can also be beneficial when psychological factors are involved.

FAQS

Your questions answered

Premature ejaculation treatments can reduce the symptoms of premature ejaculation in different ways depending on their active ingredient.

Dapoxetine: Dapoxetine is a type of medicine known as an SSRI (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor).

Dapoxetine’s job is to increase the activity of serotonin in the nervous system. Serotonin is a neurotransmitter that’s involved in passing messages between nerve cells. One of its functions is to send the nerve messages that trigger ejaculation.

By increasing the activity of serotonin in the nervous system, dapoxetine helps you to last longer during sex and can give you better control over when you ejaculate.

Dapoxetine is prescription only. If you take an online consultation our clinicians will decide if these treatments are suitable for you.

Each premature ejaculation treatment takes a different amount of time to kick in, giving you the flexibility to choose a treatment that suits you and your lifestyle.

Dapoxetine takes about 1-2 hours to take effect and lasts for up to 6 hours.

If you’re still experiencing premature ejaculation even when using a treatment, there are a number of other things you can try:

Email the clinical team and they’ll do their best to find you a suitable alternative.

Speak to a psychotherapist to understand and overcome the psychological reasons behind premature ejaculation.

Practise certain behavioural techniques that can help to train your body to have more control over when you orgasm. The “squeeze” and “start-stop” techniques are two different strategies that can be practised during masturbation or sexual activity which, over time, can help to improve control over the timing of ejaculation.

We recommend getting in touch with one of our clinicians to talk through your options and decide which steps are best for you. Our consultations are free and entirely online.

This depends greatly on your personal experience with premature ejaculation. However, you should experience a noticeable increase in the time it takes to ejaculate when using a premature ejaculation treatment.

For example, one study showed that men using dapoxetine (60mg) were able to last up to three times longer during sex than without it.
