When you’re on a weight loss journey, consistency is everything. Encountering a jammed Mounjaro pen or Mounjaro dosing issues can be incredibly frustrating, especially if you aren’t getting the support you need from your current provider.
Whether you're already a Numan patient and experiencing problems with your pen or you're considering switching to a provider with more robust clinical oversight, understanding Mounjaro pen mechanics is key to a stress-free experience.
Here's our expert guide to troubleshooting your Mounjaro pen and why what might seem like a malfunction may actually be keeping you safe.
Your Mounjaro troubleshooting guide: 4 common problems
1. The "hidden" safety lock: Have you taken all four doses?
The most common reason for a jammed Mounjaro pen is the Mounjaro safety mechanism. These pens are precision-engineered to deliver exactly four doses of tirzepatide.
Once the fourth dose is administered, the pen’s dial will lock. This is a deliberate design to prevent accidental overdosing. If you cannot turn the dial, check your dosage log- you'll likely have completed your 4-week cycle.
2. Leftover liquid in your Mounjaro pen
A common point of confusion for patients (especially those new to managing weight loss injections) is seeing leftover liquid in the Mounjaro pen after the fourth dose.
It's normal to see a small amount of medication remaining in the reservoir. This extra liquid is there to ensure the pen can be primed and that the final 0.6ml dose is delivered with 100% accuracy. This liquid is not intended for use. Attempting to "force" a fifth dose can result in an inaccurate tirzepatide dosage and may damage the mechanism.
3. Needle attachment problems
If your pen won’t inject and the dial isn't locked, the culprit might be the needle. Needle attachment problems can prevent the medication from flowing:
The double-cap trap: Ensure you have removed both the clear outer cap and the smaller inner needle shield.
The connection: The needle must be pushed straight onto the pen and twisted firmly. If it’s crooked, it won’t pierce the rubber seal, leading to a blocked injection pen.
How to fix a Mounjaro pen that won’t inject
If you suspect a malfunctioning Mounjaro pen, follow these troubleshooting steps:
Prime the pen: Always perform a "prime" (turning the dial to the line icon) with a new needle to clear air bubbles.
Replace the needle: A faulty or blocked needle is more common than a faulty pen. Try a fresh needle from your pack.
Check the plunger: If the grey plunger is visible in the window and the dial won't move, the pen is empty.
If you want to know more about priming and ensuring your Mounjaro pen is ready for use, watch this video for a visual walkthrough. It demonstrates how to properly attach the needle and verify that a small drop of liquid appears, ensuring you've successfully cleared any air and avoided a blocked injection pen.
